Liveblogging! “It’s Too Damn Early,” 10/30/11

October 30, 2011

I’m covering for Emma’s “Style City” show today, so this is the “awake and cogent” version of my usual broadcast, haha. It’s been fun so far– definitely different to have the sun streaming in the windows!

Be sure to check out Dolphin Logic’s “Replicant Embolisms” album, btw. They’re local, and they’re keeping it weird– plus, I hear their show at the Douglass Art School went well! I’ll have to see about getting them on-air soon!

Hmm. I just got a “text-to-voice” message from a caller who says: “This is white noise, not music. I’m turning to country.” So I called them back, and left my own message. Next time, Jimerson Montgomery Phillips III (really?!) should grow a pair and call me himself.

Joe Lasqo — Choshi (from “Turquoise Sessions,” on Edgetone)
Gen Ken Montgomery — Friedhof (from “Birds + Machines,” on Pogus)
Dolphin Logic — Her Eyes Were A Burning Laser (from “Replicant Embolisms,” self-release)

I was pretty happy to play the new Chefkirk album, “We Must Leave The Warren,” out now on Bryan Day’s Eh? label. Day has been sticking it to thematic music for a long while now, and frankly, I’m happy to see Chefkirk’s disc in such good company. It’s no secret that I’ve dug every Chefkirk recording I’ve managed to hear, but this one seems particularly right— high tones that pierce your face; low end that rattles the room; and every sort of scratchy, squelchy noise in between. Anyone playing no-input mixers will probably face a Toshimaru Nakamura comparison at some point in time, but Chefkirk’s offerings still come out strong. It’s partly due to the obvious familiarity with his gear, but paradoxically, it’s his naked efforts to push and explore the confined space of the mixer that set this disc apart from Nakamura’s more meditative fare.

Margaret Noble — Where Am I (from “Early Works,” on FEM Records)
Margaret Noble –Fingers
Margaret Noble — Atonement
Margaret Noble — Door Number Two
Margaret Noble — Kira’s Murder
Margaret Noble — The Walk Home On Ashland

Andrea Pensado — Ktotam (from album of the same name, on Zeromoon)

Liveblogging! “ITDE” 9/3/11

September 3, 2011

This is a rather strange show… I’ve been around the block more than a few times as far as the whole “being sleepy and playing weird music” thing goes, but the disembodied, random Marilyn Monroe quotes are really quite bonkers. How is it that I hadn’t heard of Charlie Morrow prior to this XI Records release?

Anyways… I responded to a request for music review writers early yesterday, at Musique Machine. Things were going decently, until I discovered the guy wasn’t even willing to give me a link out as credit. I understand not paying writers, but really? Not even a little link love? Sheesh! On the up-side, now I’m thinking about doing reviews again. We’ll see how it goes.

Also– how many of my readers have checked out an episode of my daughter’s show, “Style City”? It’s something of a companion to “It’s Too Damn Early,” still bringing the weirdness, but with more of a focus on chiptunes and abstract electronica. If you haven’t heard it yet, watch this for the details:

July 3, 2011

Clear your schedule for this evening–tonight is one of those rare times when you can catch BOTH of my shows back-to-back!

After you’ve got your favorite listening spot ready, tune in to WSIU-FM at 10 p.m. (CST) for “Sounds Like Radio.” Spend two hours with my more avant-garde offerings, and keep up with the playlist right here while I liveblog the show.

At midnight, catch me on WDBX-FM for “It’s Too Damn Early,” and even more experimental music. I’ll be covering for “The Galaxy,” liveblogging, and you can even catch me amongst the general craziness in SLSK indie chat.

It’s four straight hours of DaveX– can you dig it?

Very strange. The lights in our currently-defunct main studio just came on by themselves. Here I was, enjoying the sunrise– albeit through the filter of three sets of large windows– and now I have to go find out if there’s some weirdo in the building playing with the light switches, or if the electrical situation here is more cock-eyed that I realized. Either way, enjoy the show.

Liveblogging! Playlist for “ITDE” 6/4/11

June 4, 2011

Once again, I’m in the Hi-Life Room a bit early, so I decided to play the first 30-minute cut off Arvo Zylo’s re-issue of “333.” This is one hell of a listen, I’m feeling a bit sorry for myself, having missed the initial cassette run. I’ll be getting back to this disc towards the end of today’s show.

Gotta say, I’m happy as hell to see a documentation of live Chefkirk/Ironing actions in the form of “Life in Florida 2010.” I dig the interplay between these two, and really enjoyed their earlier album together on Hymns. I won’t hold my breath, but I’ll throw out a “hail Mary” request– how about Chefkirk/Ironing meets Shelf Life for a Eh?/Hymns double disc. Get Bob Marsh and Hal McGee to co-narrate, omg I’m ruining these pants. But seriously, that would be awesome.

Speaking of awesome, I’m currently blowing Southern Illinoisian minds with some Government Alpha, from the “G” volume of Zelphabet. I’m still amazed at how much traction this series has, I’ve been able to listen to many of the discs over and over. This particular cut has the added benefit of masking the annoying ground loop hum coming from our studio monitors right now as well!

Arvo Zylo — Quicksand Eggs of a Beaten Pathos (from “333,” self-release)
Chefkirk, Ironing — May 13, 2010 @ Action Research #52 (from “Live in Florida 2010,” on Hymns)

May 28, 2011

Definitely having a good time hanging out in the Hi-Life Room this morning– I’ve got some cool new music, so that always helps. I’m pretty happy with this copy of “!Evil Scuff Mud,” with Eckhard Gerdes, Bryan Day, Gabe Beam, etc… the additional instrumentation (prepared pedal steel, ARP 2600, piano) help flesh out this live set of recordings. Also hard to believe, but I’m still milking my copy of “Télépathie,” (on NoType, with Aimé Dontigny and Diane Labrosse) from 2003! What can I say? It still sounds damn good.

While I’m still thinking about it, I should let you know that the Lezet album “Meld 5” is also available freely from the Internet Archive– so go grab a copy!
